The Lowell Umass ionosonde is maybe the bfief squawk you hear on HF bands as the exploring beam scans across your frequency.
Turns out that there is a lot of information from these scans available from https://giro.uml.edu/index.html, in many graphic forms, for example:
Word to the wise: click the chart if you want to enlarge it.
And then there are cool movies of sonde site data from around the world: https://giro.uml.edu/IonogramMovies/
Seems a lot more info here than just Solar flux and Geomag activity. I like the idea that the data is obtained by actually bouncing a scanning signal off the proposed F layer and seeing what actually happens.
Or, maybe it's just too much info and we'd do better with simple prop charts for tiny tots?
