for an excellent intro and easy "howto" guide, all with the FLDIGI software, available free for Linux and Windows at http://www.w1hkj.com/
(Fldigi does CW, PSK, MFSK, RTTY, Hell, DominoEX, Olivia, WEFAX, Throb and more, but not FT-8 which is handled by WSJT-X at https://wsjt.sourceforge.io/wsjtx.html and others.

Some may say RTTY is an archaic mode from yesteryear's Creed Teleprinters, but look on the ham bands and there is still plenty of traffic to enjoy and join.

Here's where to look first: 3580-3600 kHz, 7040-7100 kHz, 14080-14099 kHz, 21080-21100 kHz, 28080-28100 kHz. The double track "mark-space" on your waterfall display is distinctive and lets you find transmissions easily. Hams often use a shift of 170Hz at 45 baud, though other shifts are in common use by weather services etc.

SSTV is also not supported by FLDIGI, though fine and free software exists for it with Linux and Windows.)
