I've had a lot of fun getting RasPi Zero + MMDVM hat + pi-star software to work as an inexpensive hotspot supporting D-Star, DMR and Fusion HTs. I've also bought the DVmega Globetrotter device which allows these modes to work without a radio, just your computer. If I don't need a radio, and it works like an internet audio chat (without the video), this is not ham radio. Interesting, but there is no fun of off-grid communication, propagation...
So what if the current enthusiasm for digital text, FT8 JS8Call, Olivia, with their error correction, and low lower requirements could be enjoyed by HF voice? We'd have clear audio, over DX with all the fun and network independence of sideband.

Turns out it's possible, and given the past progress of analog TV, telephones, mail, automobile control.... I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this is the future of HF.
