I have been trying to get remote operation of an IC-7610 with Icom RS-BA1v2. Mostly great success with sideband and a little CW, but always subject to rural internet connections. Sometimes they are slow and sometimes they don't like the necessary UDP ports. RS-BA1v2 has options to reduce bandwidth by reducing audio sampling rate to accommodate a slow connection; there's obviously a limit to how much this can help.
I enjoy digital modes but they present a particular challenge for remote operation. The latency and buffering of an internet connection makes it necessary to keep the digital software local with the rig, and therefore to access it by some kind of VPN. I've tried a few solutions, eventually favoring TightVPN for its stability, but my! it is laggy and slow on all but the fastest links. Tried TeamViewer too with some success, but the best so far for access to digital software on a timely-reproduced remote desktop seems to be NoMachine ( https://www.nomachine.com/ ). Stable, worked right first time out of the box and better than the others with higher screen resolutions used with concurrent CQRLOG and wsjt-x for instance.
Anyone know of a better solution for working the home rig from out on the road? Excluding MagLoop+QRP, that is....
