Here's a few starting references for basic info about Amateur Radio SSTV, how to do it, and how it works:

A disclaimer right from the start: I get a lot of fun out of a very simple SSTV setup, and so could you. I'm certainly no expert!

Getting started:
"QST September 1990, pp. 53-56"

Detailed and very full account of how it all works.

Professional HF stations worldwide:

Not all are still broadcasting, but with a little persistence some make great catches!

Free ham radio handbook for SSTV, WEFAX and digital SSTV.:

Well, that should get you going with some easy and not-so-easy reading. If some seems a tad technical, just remember that modern SSTV free software takes are of most things, so all you have to do is enjoy the pictures!
