Re: FreeDV

Rick. How does the later FreeDV handle high levels of man-made noise (especially pulse type noise) these days? The earlier 1.8.x version (I built from source on Mint) was terrible, the slightest QRM would kill decoding for up to half a second, making it worse than analogue SSB under such conditions...

Re: FreeDV

Now considering other ham radio digital programs, has anyone used the Opensuse Build Service to "build" an RPM for FreeDV? (other than the guy that did it for FreeDV 1.8.9) There's been many changes since the above version and now the 2.0 Beta is also out. Have a look! https://freedv.org/...

QST Digital edition

QST is still very much with us, and in its digital edition, fine value. The November edition contains 132 pages of full color articles, news, product reviews and more. The cost of ARRL membership is less than a monthly trip to Mickey D's. OK, there is something you don't like about ARRL. Me too, but...

QEX Nov-Dec 2024

A fine new issue of the experimental journal included with ARRL membership. This month, some items caught my eye: Decoding Morse CW with a Variable- Length Self-Synchronizing Code Mark R. Titchener, ZL4CDE This explains in detail not only how a self-synchronizing coder/decoder works, but also the ci...

My home antennas -as used today...

And who knows what other hare-brain idea comes tomorrow... I get kind words about my HF signal, and generous reports on FT8 etc., so the question always comes up, "what is this antenna, and how much power from the linear?" No amp, just a barefoot IC-7610 with 1.42 firmware, running DPD, st...

Re: SAQ or how to receive very low frequencies

Just a thought:
We have a Clock at home that radio-synchs to WWVB on 60kHz. It's motor died, but the radio seems still alive, so I kept it while I ponder how to re-tune it to SAQ and other VLF goodies.

Any good ideas?

DPD now available on Icom IC-7610. Just done it!

DPD (Digital Pre-Distortion) is signal preprocessing before the transmitter power amp, to remove much IMD from the final signal. Often available on professional and commercial transmitters. Comes standard on the new IC-7760, and can be easily added with the newest free firmware upgrade from Icom. So...
