How to ID digital modes? Getting started.

Post by admin »

Digital modes are fun and useful, but only if you can set your rig to the appropriate mode -which means knowing what it is!

Here's a fine selection of samples to match against your puzzle signal:

These are a good first help, and there are many more sites with samples, but best of all is your ear & eye on the waterfall. You need to hear the distinctive tomes of Olivia, SSTV, RTTY, CW only once to be more expert than this beginners' guide.

Often a good hint can be had from the frequency. Here are some "usual suspects":
  • Hellschreiber: 7085. 14063.
    SSTV. 7165. 14230. 28680.
    Olivia. 7040.5 Olivia 8/? 3583 Olivia 8/? 7071 Olivia 8/1K or Olivia 16/500. 7121.5 Olivia 1. ...
    MSK144. 5357.5. 18100. 50260. 50281.5. ...
    PSK31 (BPSK) 7070+ 14070+ 28.121+
    RTTY (45.45-baud Baudot) 3584. 3593. 7055. 10142.5.
